Where DASA & CIWG Fit In
The Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme is run by the Ministry of Education (Government of India) and coordinated by NIT Rourkela. It creates a dedicated 15% supernumerary quota across NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. Within this, a carved-out 5% is reserved for Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries (CIWG).
DASA and CIWG are government-mandated, officially recognised pathways designed to make India’s top engineering colleges accessible to students and families living abroad.
DASA vs CIWG — Clearly Explained
Two categories, one portal, very different financial implications. This is the most important distinction for any NRI or Gulf-based family.
DASA — Direct Admission of Students Abroad
DASA is a scheme of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, administered through dasanit.org. It provides Foreign Nationals, OCI/PIO holders, and NRIs a dedicated pathway into UG engineering programs. Admission is based entirely on JEE (Main) rank. Tuition for DASA (Non-SAARC) candidates is charged in US Dollars.
CIWG — Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries
CIWG is a sub-category within DASA — not a separate scheme. It reserves 5% of seats for NRI students whose parent(s) work in one of 8 specified Gulf countries:
The defining advantage of CIWG: tuition is paid at Indian Rupee rates — the same as domestic students — not in US Dollars. This creates substantial savings over four years.

OCI/PIO card holders are not eligible for CIWG seats, even if a parent works in the Gulf. CIWG is exclusively for NRIs. Always confirm your nationality status before choosing a category.
Who Can Apply? Official Rules
DASA eligibility has three pillars — nationality, age, and academic performance. All three must be met simultaneously.

2. Age & Academic Eligibility
Age Requirement
Born on or after October 01, 2000. Date of birth as in Class X board certificate.
For B.E. / B.Tech.
Physics + Maths + one of (Chemistry, Bio, CS, Biotech) in Class XII with 75% or 7.5 CGPA.
For B.Arch.
Physics, Chemistry & Maths in 10+2, with 75% / 7.5 CGPA.
JEE (Main) 2025
Valid JEE (Main) 2025 rank mandatory for all DASA & CIWG candidates.
Additional CIWG Requirements
- Candidate must be an NRI — OCI/PIO not eligible
- Either or both parents must be working in one of the 8 specified Gulf countries
- Parent must hold a Gulf visa valid on any date in 2025
- Candidate must have completed 2 years schooling (Cl.11 & 12) outside India
1. Studying Class 11-12 partly in India — must prove 2 full years abroad. 2. Missing the subject combination — IB/A-Level students often miss the third qualifying science subject. 3. Confusing OCI with CIWG — OCI holders are NOT eligible for CIWG regardless of Gulf employment. 4. Parent visa expired before 2025 — must be valid on at least one date during 2025.
From JEE to Your College Seat
DASA has five clearly defined stages. Missing any step — even by a day — can end your application for that year.
Appear in JEE (Main) 2025
Register and appear in JEE (Main) 2025 — from India or international centres as announced by NTA. A valid JEE rank is mandatory for everything that follows.
Register on DASA Portal & Pay DEF
Visit dasanit.org. Pay the DASA Enrolment Fee (DEF) in one transaction. CIWG: US$300 + ₹62,500. DASA Non-SAARC: US$4,300 total. The US$300 registration fee is non-refundable.
Upload Documents & Verification
Upload all required documents. If a query is raised by the verification officer, respond within the stipulated portal deadline. Non-response = automatic cancellation.
Online Choice Filling & Seat Allotment (3 Rounds)
Fill institute-branch preferences in order. DASA runs 3 rounds. Allotment is based on JEE rank within your declared preference list.
Online Reporting & Physical Reporting at Institute
Complete online reporting on the portal to confirm your seat. Then physically report to the allotted institute with original documents and pay balance fees directly to the institute.
The DASA process is fully computerised and non-reversible. Missing the DEF payment window means you are out of the 2025 process with no exceptions or appeals.

Understanding Cut-offs
DASA cut-offs are not announced in advance. They emerge from actual demand each round. Understanding how they work is more valuable than chasing exact numbers.
How DASA Cut-offs Work
A cut-off is the JEE (Main) rank of the last candidate admitted to a particular institute-branch-category in a given round. It changes every year based on four key factors:
Institute Reputation
Top NITs attract stronger candidates and have more competitive closing ranks.
Branch Demand
CSE and ECE consistently close at stronger ranks than Civil or Chemical at the same institute.
Round Number
Later rounds may open seats unfilled in Round 1, sometimes at more accessible ranks.
Category
CIWG and DASA-General seats are separate pools with separate cut-offs. Check the correct category.
Historic data helps build a probability range — not predictions. Always build a safe-moderate-reach shortlist. Never rely on a single year’s figure.
Interpreting Historical Trends Wisely
- Use 3-5 years of data to identify a trend band, not a single year
- Compare both opening rank and closing rank
- Track CIWG seats and DASA-General seats separately — they are different pools
- Avoid any source claiming to “predict” exact cut-offs — no model is perfectly accurate
Official Fees — Accurate & Sourced
Fee information is one of the most misrepresented aspects of DASA. This chapter uses only officially confirmed data from the DASA 2025 Information Brochure.
DASA Enrolment Fee (DEF) — Official 2025 Figures
The DEF is paid centrally via the DASA portal. It is uniform across ALL NITs, IIITs, and IIEST — it does not vary by institute at this stage.

The first-semester DEF tuition is identical across all NITs — US$4,000 for DASA Non-SAARC and ₹62,500 for CIWG. There is no Top NIT vs Mid NIT difference in the centrally collected DASA fee. Fee differences between institutes appear only in Semesters 2-8, paid directly to each institute.

The candidate’s name must be exactly identical across passport, marksheets, and JEE result. Any mismatch — including middle name differences — can trigger a document query that delays or cancels your application.

Can CBSE students studying abroad apply to DASA?
Yes. DASA accepts Class XII qualifications from any board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) — including CBSE, ISC, IB, Cambridge, and most international boards. You must still meet the 75% / 7.5 CGPA requirement and Physics + Maths + one optional science subject combination.
Is CIWG a guaranteed admission?
No. CIWG is a category within DASA, not a guaranteed seat. Admission depends on your JEE (Main) rank, your preference list, and available seats in each round. However, CIWG typically has less competition than DASA-General, making it relatively easier to secure a seat.
What if my Class XII aggregate is slightly below 75%?
The 75% threshold is strict. Students with CGPA-based boards should obtain an official equivalence certificate. If your percentage falls short, there is no provision for relaxation in general category — the rule applies uniformly.
Can a student switch from DASA to CIWG mid-process?
No. You must declare your category (DASA / CIWG / Double Tag) at the time of registration. Mid-process changes are not allowed. Double Tag (CIWG + Non-SAARC) is the safest option if you qualify for both.
My parent’s Gulf visa expires soon. Can I still apply for CIWG?
Yes, as long as the visa is valid on at least one date in 2025. The exact date is not specified — even 1 January 2025 validity counts. Carry the visa copy with clear validity dates.
Can OCI/PIO card holders apply for CIWG?
No. CIWG is exclusively for Indian passport holders (NRIs). OCI and PIO card holders can apply under DASA-General (Non-SAARC) but are ineligible for the CIWG sub-category.
Does JEE (Main) have to be taken from an international centre?
No. JEE (Main) can be taken from any centre in India or abroad as announced by NTA. Many NRI students fly to India for the exam. The exam location does not affect your DASA or CIWG eligibility.
If I fail to physically report at the institute, do I get my fee back?
The US$300 registration fee is non-refundable under all circumstances. The tuition component may be partially refundable depending on the stage at which you withdraw — refer to the DASA brochure for the exact refund policy.
