Where are India's engineering colleges actually located?
India has more than 5,800 AICTE-approved engineering institutions across 31 states and UTs. Filter by IITs, NITs, TNEA, Deemed, Private, IoE, NIRF Top 25 or NAAC A++. Click any state for a district-wise drill-down.
Filter, then click any state for district detail.
Pin filters (IITs, NITs, IoE, NIRF, NAAC) drop location markers at each institution. Choropleth filters (Deemed, Private) shade states by count. Click any state to see its district-wise distribution and notable colleges.

Total engineering institutions
Combined count of unique AICTE-approved engineering institutions. Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka together host nearly 60% of all colleges in India.
Find a college that offers the branch you want.
Search across 90+ engineering institutions — IITs, NITs, IIITs, IoEs, Deemed Universities and top private colleges. Filter by type, state, or branch offered.
Where each ranked college focuses.
120 of the 148 colleges here hold an NIRF Engineering 2026 rank. The bar next to each shows how its branches split across the four engineering families — so you can see at a glance whether a college is computer-focused or a broad-base institute, and compare that against its rank.
How to read this. NIRF publishes exact ranks only to #100; below that it uses bands (101–150, 151–200, 201–300). Each bar is proportional to the college's branch count in each family — a focused private college is mostly navy (computer), while an old IIT or NIT runs across all four because it carries deep mechanical, civil and process departments. Rank reflects research, placements and perception — a different axis from admission demand. Switch to Waffle cards for a small-multiple texture view. Source: NIRF Engineering 2026 (MoE).
What's the difference between these?
Each filter on the map represents a different category with its own admission process, fee structure, and academic culture. Fit matters more than label.
IITs
Indian Institutes of Technology. Admission via JEE Advanced. Combined ~17,000 BTech seats.
NITs
National Institutes of Technology. JoSAA using JEE Main. ~24,000 BTech seats.
TNEA
Tamil Nadu state counselling — government, aided and self-financing engineering colleges. Class 12 cut-off based.
Deemed universities
UGC-designated autonomous universities. Includes VIT, SRM, BITS, MAHE, Amrita.
Private colleges
Self-financed colleges affiliated to a state technical university. State counselling or management/NRI quota.
Institutions of Eminence
MoE-conferred status with exceptional autonomy and ₹1,000 cr in central support over 5 years.
NIRF Top 25
MoE National Institutional Ranking Framework 2026 — leading engineering institutes by teaching, research, outcomes, outreach.
NAAC A++
National Assessment and Accreditation Council A++ (CGPA 3.51–4.00). The highest peer-reviewed quality grade.

A note on the numbers.
Engineering institution counts are fuzzy because AICTE, UGC, NIRF and state DTE lists rarely agree. Here's how we reconciled them.
Sources. AICTE Approval Process Handbook 2023-24; MoE IoE official list; UGC Deemed Universities list; NIRF 2026 Engineering category; NAAC database (naac.gov.in); TNEA Anna University 2024 participating institutions; state DTE counselling lists. Private counts rounded to nearest 5–10.
What's counted as "engineering". Only institutions offering AICTE-approved B.E./B.Tech programmes. Polytechnics, pure science institutes and B.Sc-only institutions excluded.
TNEA filter. TNEA is a counselling process (not a national category) so the filter highlights only Tamil Nadu. The 571 includes government, aided and self-financing colleges. Tamil Nadu's private colleges are also counted under "Private" — there's deliberate overlap, since most TNEA colleges are private.
Overlap caution. IIT Madras counts under IITs, IoE, NIRF and NAAC. BITS Pilani counts under Deemed, IoE, NIRF and NAAC. Totals across filters will not sum cleanly — by design, since each filter answers a different question.
District drill-down. District figures available for top 12 states (TN, MH, KA, TG, AP, UP, KL, DL, GJ, WB, MP, RJ). Other states show summary only.
Numbers are the start. Fit is the rest.
Knowing how many IITs exist doesn't tell you which one fits your child's profile, budget, and career direction. We work with students and parents to map their JEE/CET score to a realistic, well-matched shortlist — not a wishlist.
Same data, very different outcomes. A mentor turns it into your decision.
