NIRF Engineering: 3-Year Movement Matrix β€” EduAakashaa {% block meta_description %}{% endblock %}

Three years, one story:
who moved and who didn't

The top 4 hasn't budged for 3 years. Past rank 10, the table is in motion β€” private universities climbing, traditional regional names slipping. We laid the matrix out and pulled the patterns.

Each row is one institution; each column is one year. The bubbles are NIRF ranks; the move column shows how many places they climbed or fell between 2023 and 2025. "β€”" means the college wasn't in the published top-30 that year.

02 Β· Movers & fallers

Who climbed hardest, who slipped the most

Movement of 5+ ranks over 3 years is rare and meaningful. These are the ten institutions where the change was significant enough to signal a real shift in performance β€” not just survey noise.

03 Β· Rank & score trajectory

Three years of motion, plotted

The line chart shows where each top-10 college sat in each year (lower line = better rank). The score chart shows the absolute score they earned out of 100. Both tell different parts of the same story.

Top 10 rank trajectory

Y-axis is inverted (1 at top). Lines that go up mean the college fell in rank; lines that go down mean it climbed.

Score evolution Β· top 6

Even at #1, IIT Madras's score has slipped 1.07 points in 2 years. The middle of the top 10 is gaining on the leaders.

04 Β· Six takeaways from three years of data

What the matrix is actually telling us

Honest reads of patterns in the data β€” not hype, not predictions. These are the things a counsellor should explain before a student finalises a shortlist.

Insight 01

The top 4 is locked. Don't waste energy waiting for it to change.

IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur held ranks 1, 2, 3 and 4 in 2023, 2024 and 2025 β€” no movement at all. For students choosing between them, NIRF rank is no longer a discriminator. Branch, location, faculty fit and campus culture decide.

Rank-1 score, 3-year drift89.79 β†’ 88.72
Insight 02

Private universities are climbing faster than any other category.

Three of the five biggest climbers are private: BITS Pilani (+14), SRM (+14), UPES (+11). NIRF rewards research output, financial resources and placement data β€” areas where well-funded private institutions can iterate faster than state universities tied to government budgets.

3/5
Top-5 climbers that are privateBITS Β· SRM Β· UPES
Insight 03

State universities are losing ground β€” even good ones.

Jadavpur fell 8 ranks (10β†’18), Anna University fell 6 (14β†’20), ICT Mumbai fell 26 (15β†’41). These are institutions with strong alumni and reputations β€” but they trail on financial-resource and research-output metrics where private universities are aggressively investing.

Insight 04

Newer IITs are catching up to the founding seven.

IIT Patna jumped from rank 41 to 19 in two years. IIT Hyderabad overtook IIT Guwahati for the first time in 2025 (7 vs 8). IIT BHU climbed from 15 to 10 by 2024 and held. The "old IIT vs new IIT" hierarchy is real but narrowing.

IIT Patna Β· rank gain in 2 years+22 places
Insight 05

Score gaps are compressing β€” the middle is catching up.

In 2023, the gap between rank 5 (IIT Roorkee, 75.64) and rank 10 was about 6–7 points. By 2025, ranks 5–10 span just 11.45 points (78.69 down to 67.24), and ranks 11–25 are packed into a single 2.32-point band. A 1-point swing now equals 4–5 rank places.

Rank 11–25 score band, 202563.51–67.02
Insight 06

Year-to-year rank changes of 1–2 places are mostly noise.

IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee swapped 5/6 in 2024, then held. IIT Hyderabad and IIT Guwahati swapped 7/8 in 2025. These are score differences under 0.5 points β€” statistical noise. Treat 3-year direction as signal; treat single-year jumps with skepticism.

05 Β· What this means for you

How to actually use 3-year trends in your shortlist

A single-year NIRF rank is a snapshot. The 3-year trajectory tells you which direction the institution is moving in β€” which matters far more for the four years you'll spend there.

01

Look at the trajectory, not the snapshot

A college at rank 25 climbing to 11 in two years is on a stronger growth path than one stuck at rank 14 for three years. By the time you graduate, the climber may have overtaken the static name.

02

Distinguish movement from noise

1-2 rank swings between consecutive years usually mean nothing. A 5+ rank move sustained over 2 years is a real signal. Use the 3-year delta in our matrix as your filter.

03

Match rank momentum to your branch

NIRF ranks the institute as a whole. If a college's climb is driven by new research labs, its CSE/ECE branches benefit first. If the climb is from placement data, all branches likely benefit. Ask which sub-parameter is driving the move.

Want a shortlist built on 3-year trends, not just last year's rank?

Our counsellors pair NIRF trajectories with your JEE / TNEA / KCET rank, branch preference and budget β€” and produce a realistic college plan in one sitting.

Same data, very different outcomes. A mentor turns it into your decision.
