Planning for 2027?

The 2026 cycle has concluded. The DASA 2027 brochure and schedule have not been published yet (as of October 2026) — rules, fees and dates can change, so treat this guide as the best indicator for 2027, not a guarantee. You will need your JEE Main 2027 rank (Session 1 is listed for 22–30 January 2027). We update this page the day the new brochure is released. See the schedule page and the DASA 2027 atlas.

Chapter One Introduction to Engineering Admissions for NRIs
Chapter 1

Why Study Engineering in India?

For NRI families in the Gulf, India’s top engineering colleges offer academic credibility, global placement value, and affordable education.

India’s National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and Schools of Planning & Architecture (SPAs) are among Asia’s most respected technical institutions. NIT graduates are recruited by leading global firms — and an NIT degree is widely recognised in the Gulf, UK, US, and Australia.

The Challenge Facing NRI Families

Q?

Quota Confusion

Many families are unaware of dedicated NRI quotas — DASA and CIWG — which sit outside the highly competitive domestic JEE pool.

$$

Fee Misinformation

Widespread misconception that NIT fees are prohibitively expensive, when CIWG students pay Indian-parity tuition — a major financial advantage.

Doc

Document Complexity

Multiple document types, strict deadlines, and verification requirements catch families off guard when managing applications from abroad.

Cal

Timeline Pressure

DASA runs on a tight calendar. Missing the JEE Main registration or DEF payment window means waiting an entire year.

Where DASA & CIWG Fit In

The Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme is run by the Ministry of Education (Government of India) and coordinated by IIEST Shibpur (for the 2026 cycle). It creates a dedicated 15% supernumerary quota across NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. Within this, a carved-out 5% is reserved for Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries (CIWG).

OK
Key Takeaway

DASA and CIWG are government-mandated, officially recognised pathways designed to make India’s top engineering colleges accessible to students and families living abroad.

Chapter Two What is DASA & CIWG?
Chapter 2

DASA vs CIWG — Clearly Explained

Two categories, one portal, very different financial implications. This is the most important distinction for any NRI or Gulf-based family.

DASA — Direct Admission of Students Abroad

DASA is a scheme of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, administered through csab.nic.in. It provides Foreign Nationals, OCI/PIO holders, and NRIs a dedicated pathway into UG engineering programs. Admission is based entirely on JEE (Main) rank. Tuition for DASA (Non-SAARC) candidates is charged in US Dollars.

CIWG — Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries

CIWG is a sub-category within DASA — not a separate scheme. It reserves 5% of seats for NRI students whose parent(s) work in one of 8 specified Gulf countries:

UAEUnited Arab Emirates
KSASaudi Arabia
KWTKuwait
QATQatar
OMNOman
BHRBahrain
IRQIraq
IRNIran

The defining advantage of CIWG: tuition is paid at Indian Rupee rates — the same as domestic students — not in US Dollars. This creates substantial savings over four years.

Chapter Three Eligibility Criteria
Chapter 3

Who Can Apply? Official Rules

DASA eligibility has three pillars — nationality, age, and academic performance. All three must be met simultaneously.

1. Nationality Eligibility

CategoryDescriptionCIWG Eligible?
NRINon-Resident Indian (Indian passport, residing abroad)Yes (if parent in Gulf)
OCIOverseas Citizen of India (foreign passport + OCI card)No
PIOPerson of Indian Origin (PIO card)No
FNForeign NationalNo
!
The residency rule (checked before the rank)

Indian nationals and OCI/PIO (I) candidates need at least two years of education — including Classes 11 and 12 — in a foreign country during the last eight years, and must pass Class 12 from abroad. Moving to India for Grade 12 ends DASA/CIWG eligibility, whatever the rank. Foreign nationals studying in any country, including India, may apply.

OCI / PIO — choose (I) or (F)

Following the court rulings quoted in Annexure 8 of the 2026 brochure (clarified in Version 1.5, 27 July 2026), OCI/PIO candidates register either as OCI/PIO (F) — treated as foreign nationals, with no residential restriction — or as OCI/PIO (I) — treated at par with Indian nationals, so the two-years-abroad rule applies. Cards issued on or after 04.03.2021 are always (F); earlier cardholders choose at registration, and the choice cannot be changed later. Neither category can claim CIWG.

2. Age & Academic Eligibility

Age

Age Requirement

Born on or after October 01, 2001. Date of birth as in Class X board certificate.

B.E

For B.E. / B.Tech.

Physics + Maths + one of (Chemistry, Bio, CS, Biotech) in Class XII with 75% or 7.5 CGPA in the five subjects, as per JoSAA 2026 Annexure 2(b).

Arch

For B.Arch.

Physics, Chemistry & Maths in 10+2, with 75% / 7.5 CGPA.

JEE

JEE (Main) 2026

Valid JEE (Main) 2026 rank mandatory for all DASA & CIWG candidates.

Additional CIWG Requirements

  • Candidate must be an NRI — OCI/PIO not eligible
  • Either or both parents must be working in one of the 8 specified Gulf countries
  • Parent must hold a passport, Gulf visa and work permit valid on any date in the admission year (2026 cycle: any date of 2026), with an employer certificate in the prescribed format (Annexure 12)
  • Candidate must have completed 2 years of schooling (Classes 11 & 12) outside India, within the last 8 years, and passed Class 12 from abroad
!
Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Studying Class 11-12 partly in India — must prove 2 full years abroad. 2. Missing the subject combination — IB/A-Level students often miss the third qualifying science subject. 3. Confusing OCI with CIWG — OCI holders are NOT eligible for CIWG regardless of Gulf employment. 4. Parent visa expired before 2026 — must be valid on at least one date during 2026.

Chapter Four Step-by-Step Admission Process
Chapter 4

From JEE to Your College Seat

DASA has five clearly defined stages. Missing any step — even by a day — can end your application for that year.

01

Appear in JEE (Main) 2026

Register and appear in JEE (Main) 2026 — from India or international centres as announced by NTA. A valid JEE rank is mandatory for everything that follows.

02

Register on DASA Portal & Pay DEF

Visit csab.nic.in. Pay the DASA Enrolment Fee (DEF) in one transaction. CIWG: US$300 + ₹62,500. DASA Non-SAARC: US$4,300 total; SAARC: US$2,300. The US$300 registration fee is non-refundable. In 2026 registration opened on 28 July and closed on 3 August.

03

Upload Documents & Verification

Upload all required documents. If a query is raised by the verification officer, respond within the stipulated portal deadline. Non-response = automatic cancellation.

04

Online Choice Filling & Seat Allotment (2 Rounds)

Fill institute-branch preferences in order. DASA 2026 ran 2 rounds (Round-I and Round-II, the final round). Allotment is based on JEE rank within your declared preference list.

05

Online Reporting & Physical Reporting at Institute

Complete online reporting on the portal to confirm your seat. Then physically report to the allotted institute with original documents and pay balance fees directly to the institute.

!
Critical Rule

The DASA process is fully computerised and non-reversible. Missing the DEF payment window means you are out of the 2026 process with no exceptions or appeals.

The 2026 cycle had 87 institutes (31 NITs/IIEST, 18 IIITs, 38 others). The exact list is in Annexure 1 of the DASA 2026 brochure (Version 1.5) at csab.nic.in. Institutes may change year to year — always verify.

Most Popular Branches Among CIWG Students

CSE

Computer Science

Most sought-after. Top NIT CSE seats attract the most competitive DASA ranks. Strong global placement demand.

ECE

Electronics & Communication

Second most popular. Excellent for semiconductor, telecom, or embedded systems careers — high-growth sectors in the Gulf.

ME

Mechanical Engineering

Aligns with oil & gas, manufacturing, and energy sectors where many Gulf NRI families have career connections.

EEE

Electrical Engineering

Power, renewables, and smart grid sectors are booming in the Gulf. EEE from a top NIT carries strong career relevance.

Chapter Six Cut-offs & Seat Trends
Chapter 6

Understanding Cut-offs

DASA cut-offs are not announced in advance. They emerge from actual demand each round. Understanding how they work is more valuable than chasing exact numbers.

How DASA Cut-offs Work

A cut-off is the JEE (Main) rank of the last candidate admitted to a particular institute-branch-category in a given round. It changes every year based on four key factors:

NIT

Institute Reputation

Top NITs attract stronger candidates and have more competitive closing ranks.

CSE

Branch Demand

CSE and ECE consistently close at stronger ranks than Civil or Chemical at the same institute.

R2

Round Number

Round-II (the last round in DASA 2026) may open seats left unfilled in Round-I, and vacant CIWG seats convert to Non-CIWG there.

Cat

Category

CIWG and DASA-General seats are separate pools with separate cut-offs. Check the correct category.

!
Disclaimer — Cut-offs Change Every Year

Historic data helps build a probability range — not predictions. Always build a safe-moderate-reach shortlist. Never rely on a single year’s figure.

What the 2026 closing ranks showed

378

Programmes

Up from 324 in 2025: 104 programmes added and 50 dropped.

−8%

CIWG tightened

Median CIWG closing rank fell about 8% — a tougher cut-off for the typical programme.

+18%

Non-CIWG eased

Median Non-CIWG closing rank rose about 18% — an easier cut-off.

Core

Core branches tightened

Civil, Bio/Food and Chemical tightened most; Computer/IT/AI eased. Plan on 3–4 years of trends.

Interpreting Historical Trends Wisely

  • Use 3-5 years of data to identify a trend band, not a single year
  • Compare both opening rank and closing rank
  • Track CIWG seats and DASA-General seats separately — they are different pools
  • Avoid any source claiming to “predict” exact cut-offs — no model is perfectly accurate

Chapter Seven Fee Structure & CIWG Financial Advantage
Chapter 7

Official Fees — Accurate & Sourced

Fee information is one of the most misrepresented aspects of DASA. This chapter uses only officially confirmed data from the DASA 2026 Information Brochure (Version 1.5). The 2027 fee table will be published with the 2027 brochure — budget on these figures until then.

DASA Enrolment Fee (DEF) — Official 2026 Figures

The DEF is paid centrally via the DASA portal. It is uniform across ALL NITs, IIITs, and IIEST — it does not vary by institute at this stage.

Candidate TagRegistration FeeTuition Fee (Sem 1)Total DEF
DASA-CIWG (Single Tag)US$ 300₹62,500US$300 + ₹62,500
DASA Non-SAARC (NRI/OCI/PIO)US$ 300US$ 4,000US$ 4,300

Double Tag (CIWG + Non-SAARC)US$ 300US$ 4,000US$ 4,300 (refund if CIWG allocated)
!
Key Clarification

The first-semester DEF tuition is identical across all NITs — US$4,000 for DASA Non-SAARC and ₹62,500 for CIWG. There is no Top NIT vs Mid NIT difference in the centrally collected DASA fee. Fee differences between institutes appear only in Semesters 2-8, paid directly to each institute.

Chapter Ten Frequently Asked Questions
Chapter 10

Real Questions from NRI Parents

The most common points of confusion from NRI and Gulf-based families. All answers align with official DASA 2026 documents.

Can CBSE students studying abroad apply to DASA?

Yes. DASA accepts Class XII qualifications from any board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) — including CBSE, ISC, IB, Cambridge, and most international boards. You must still meet the 75% / 7.5 CGPA requirement and Physics + Maths + one optional science subject combination.

Is CIWG a guaranteed admission?

No. CIWG is a category within DASA, not a guaranteed seat. Admission depends on your JEE (Main) rank, your preference list, and available seats in each round. However, CIWG typically has less competition than DASA-General, making it relatively easier to secure a seat.

What if my Class XII aggregate is slightly below 75%?

The 75% threshold is strict. Students with CGPA-based boards should obtain an official equivalence certificate. If your percentage falls short, there is no provision for relaxation in general category — the rule applies uniformly.

Can a student switch from DASA to CIWG mid-process?

No. You must declare your category (DASA / CIWG / Double Tag) at the time of registration. Mid-process changes are not allowed. Double Tag (CIWG + Non-SAARC) is the safest option if you qualify for both.

My parent’s Gulf visa expires soon. Can I still apply for CIWG?

Yes, as long as the visa is valid on at least one date in 2026. The exact date is not specified — even 1 January 2026 validity counts. Carry the visa copy with clear validity dates.

Can OCI/PIO card holders apply for CIWG?

No. CIWG is exclusively for Indian passport holders (NRIs). OCI and PIO card holders can apply under DASA-General (Non-SAARC) but are ineligible for the CIWG sub-category.

How many DASA rounds were there in 2026?

Two. DASA had three rounds in 2024 and 2025; the 2026 brochure runs Round-I (result 6 Aug) and Round-II (result 12 Aug), and Round-II is final — there is no Exit once it starts. Vacant CIWG seats convert to Non-CIWG at Round-II.

When will DASA 2027 registration open?

Not announced yet. In 2026 it opened on 28 July, right after JoSAA, on csab.nic.in. The 2027 dates will follow the JEE Main / JoSAA 2027 timeline and will be in the 2027 brochure. Rules and fees can change, so re-check each item when it is published.

Does JEE (Main) have to be taken from an international centre?

No. JEE (Main) can be taken from any centre in India or abroad as announced by NTA. Many NRI students fly to India for the exam. The exam location does not affect your DASA or CIWG eligibility.

If I fail to physically report at the institute, do I get my fee back?

The US$300 registration fee is non-refundable under all circumstances. The tuition component may be partially refundable depending on the stage at which you withdraw — refer to the DASA brochure for the exact refund policy.
