Eligibility ยท Confirmed

Class 12 marks remain the only criterion

No entrance exam. Admission is purely based on the normalised Class 12 score across Mathematics (100), Physics (50) and Chemistry (50) โ€” total 200 marks. Tamil Nadu nativity proof is mandatory if you have not studied class VIIIโ€“XII in TN.

Counselling format ยท Confirmed

Three counselling streams in 2026

General counselling, Supplementary counselling, and the SCA-to-SC counselling will run in sequence. The complete process is online except for the in-person certificate verification at TNEA Facilitation Centres (TFCs) of your choice.

Application fee ยท Unchanged

โ‚น500 for OC/BC/BCM/MBC ยท โ‚น250 for SC/SCA/ST

Online payment via debit / credit card, net banking or UPI. Fee waivers and concessions continue for eligible reserved categories โ€” keep your community certificate and income proof ready before opening the form.

Important context

15 TN colleges had zero TNEA intake in 2025

According to DoTE-sourced reports, fifteen Tamil Nadu engineering colleges recorded zero student intake in the 2025 TNEA cycle. Anna University was asked to share deficiencies. This is a strong signal โ€” verify any unfamiliar college's NAAC, NBA accreditation and live operating status before listing it as a choice.

2025 reference ยท For context

About 2.39 lakh ranks issued in TNEA 2025

In the 2025 cycle, around 2,39,299 candidates were ranked based on normalised Class 12 scores. 141 students secured ranks 1โ€“141 by scoring a perfect 200/200. Round 2 allotment closed on August 4, 2025; supplementary deadline was extended to August 14, 2025 by the Higher Education Minister.

Always verify on the official portal. EduAakashaa compiles these updates from tneaonline.org, the Directorate of Technical Education, and verified press reports. Dates and deadlines occasionally shift โ€” open tneaonline.org directly before you act on anything time-bound.
Core facts ยท Know this first

TNEA is a counselling process, not an exam.

There is no written entrance test. Admission to government, government-aided, Anna University constituent, and surrendered self-financing seats is decided by your normalised Class 12 marks in PCM โ€” reduced to 200.

01

How marks are calculated

Maths scaled to 100, Physics scaled to 50, Chemistry scaled to 50. Total out of 200 becomes your cutoff mark for ranking.

02

Tie-breaking rule

Same cutoff? Ties are broken in this order: Maths marks โ†’ Physics marks โ†’ Chemistry marks โ†’ date of birth (older first) โ†’ random number.

03

Three counselling streams

General counselling for the main rank list, Supplementary counselling for remaining seats, and a separate SCA-to-SC conversion round.

04

Eligibility threshold

General category needs โ‰ฅ45% in PCM; reserved categories need โ‰ฅ40%. Passed 10+2 with PCM compulsory from a recognised board.

05

Nativity rules

Studied Class 8โ€“12 in Tamil Nadu? No nativity certificate needed. Otherwise, TN natives studying outside need a digitally signed e-certificate.

06

No upper age limit

Unlike some national exams, TNEA has no maximum age limit. Candidates of any age who meet academic and nativity criteria can apply.

Formula ยท How your rank is built

Class 12 marks โ†’ Cutoff out of 200

Mathematics
100/100
Physics
50/50
Chemistry
50/50
=
Cutoff (out of)
200/200

Your Class 12 Maths mark is halved to fit 100; Physics and Chemistry are halved to fit 50 each. The sum becomes your TNEA cutoff โ€” the number all colleges publish in their cutoff tables.

The process ยท Start to finish

Ten steps from registration to reporting at college.

Hover the orange alert icon on any step to see the most common mistakes students make at that stage โ€” and exactly how to avoid them. These are the slip-ups we see every counselling cycle.

01
Step 01 ยท Registration

Create your account on tneaonline.org

Visit the official TNEA portal and click "New Registration". Enter name, date of birth, email, and mobile number. An OTP confirms the mobile, and a unique Application ID and password are generated. Keep a written copy of both.

Window: 2nd week May โ€“ early June Time needed: 15 min
Common mistakes
Don't rush the basics
  • Using a parent's mobile you'll lose access to later
  • Typing name differently from the Class 10 certificate
  • Missing the OTP expiry window, then losing the draft
  • Not noting the Application ID before closing the tab
02
Step 02 ยท Application form

Fill personal, academic & category details

Enter Class 10, 11 (for TN board), and 12 marks exactly as they appear on the marksheet. Select your community, nativity, special category (if any), schooling history from 6th to 12th, and preferred TFC for document verification.

Time needed: 45โ€“60 min Keep marksheets open
Trip-ups we see
There is no correction window
  • Typos in marks or subject codes โ€” no easy fix after freeze
  • Selecting wrong community (BC vs MBC vs BCM) โ€” affects cutoff
  • Skipping the 7.5% government school tick box when eligible
  • Choosing a distant TFC when a nearer one is available
  • Not using the preview page before final submit
03
Step 03 ยท Payment

Pay the application fee

The application fee is โ‚น500 for OC, BC, BCM, MBC & DNC candidates, and โ‚น250 for SC, SCA, and ST candidates. Pay online via debit/credit card, net banking, or UPI. Demand Draft (DD) payment is accepted only at the TFC in favour of "The Secretary, TNEA", payable at Chennai.

OC/BC: โ‚น500 SC/SCA/ST: โ‚น250 Save the receipt
Payment pitfalls
Don't assume payment = submitted
  • Paying but not clicking "Submit Application" after
  • Closing the browser before the receipt downloads
  • Paying again after a "pending" status โ€” most resolve in 24h
  • Using a card whose OTP goes to someone else's phone
04
Step 04 ยท Document upload

Upload scanned copies & freeze

Scan every required document clearly โ€” Class 10 and 12 marksheets, TC, community and nativity certificates (if applicable), photo, signature. Upload on the portal, preview each file, tick the declaration, and click "Freeze Upload". Freezing is irreversible.

PDF / JPG format Each file size caps apply Keep originals ready
Scan mistakes cost ranks
Poor scans โ†’ rejected at TFC
  • Blurry phone photos instead of proper scans
  • Cutting off stamp/seal at the edge of the certificate
  • Uploading attested photocopies โ€” originals only
  • Skipping the freeze step after upload
  • Forgetting the 11th marksheet (Tamil Nadu board only)
05
Step 05 ยท Random number

Receive your 10-digit random number

DoTE assigns every registered candidate a unique 10-digit random number, used for tie-breaking and verification scheduling. The number appears in your portal login and is sent via SMS. This determines your TFC verification slot.

Released: June 2026 Check SMS + portal
Tracking matters
The random number is not your rank
  • Assuming a low random number means a good rank โ€” it doesn't
  • Ignoring the e-call letter and missing the TFC slot
  • Not screenshotting the portal page for backup
  • Panicking before the number is released
06
Step 06 ยท TFC verification

Physical verification at the TNEA Facilitation Centre

Report to your chosen TFC (around 110 TFCs across the state) with every original certificate. Officials match the uploaded scans against originals. Any mismatch can delay or reject your application. Only verified candidates enter the rank list.

Location: 110 TFCs Carry all originals Parents welcome
TFC day mistakes
Missing docs = lost day
  • Forgetting the Transfer Certificate (very common)
  • Bringing a provisional instead of permanent community certificate
  • Going on the wrong date per your random number slot
  • Not carrying the filled application printout
  • Bringing photocopies only, no originals
07
Step 07 ยท Rank list

Rank list publication & grievance window

After verification, DoTE publishes the TNEA rank list. Check yours, verify that category, 7.5% eligibility, and special reservations are correctly reflected. If something is wrong, the grievance redressal window is your only chance to flag it.

Expected: Late June 2026 Grievance window: 2โ€“3 days
Don't miss the window
Verify every detail
  • Not checking if 7.5% Govt School tag is active
  • Ignoring wrong category โ€” it silently changes your cutoff list
  • Missing the grievance window (usually just 48โ€“72 hrs)
  • Not saving a PDF copy of your rank card
08
Step 08 ยท Choice filling

List college + branch preferences in order

The single most important step. You can list many college-branch combinations in order of preference. The system tries to allot your highest-ranked available choice. Research cutoffs, placement, location, and fees before locking. Add realistic safety options at the bottom.

Window: 3 days per round Use the cutoff predictor
The biggest trap
Filling only reach choices
  • Listing only CSE in top-5 colleges โ€” allotment fails
  • Ordering by "what sounds good" instead of last year's cutoff
  • Filing by parental pressure, not fit or interest
  • Not locking the choice list before the deadline
  • Confusing college branch with college name in dropdowns
09
Step 09 ยท Seat allotment & confirmation

Respond within 2 days โ€” pick one of four options

After allotment is released, you get two days to respond: Accept & Join, Accept & Upward, Reject & Upward, or Reject & Quit. The choice you pick controls whether you remain in the counselling pipeline. Download the provisional allotment order.

Response window: ~2 days 4 options available
Decision day errors
Wrong option = lost seat
  • Picking "Reject & Quit" thinking you can re-enter โ€” you can't
  • "Accept & Upward" without understanding you might lose current seat
  • Missing the 2-day deadline and auto-rejecting everything
  • Not downloading the allotment order before the window closes
10
Step 10 ยท Reporting & fee payment

Report to the allotted college or TFC

Carry the allotment order and all originals to the allotted college (or nearest TFC, depending on the round). Pay the tuition fees within the deadline. Failure to report on time cancels the seat and ejects you from further rounds.

Deadline: Round-specific Carry all originals Keep fee receipt
Final-mile mistakes
Don't treat this as a formality
  • Waiting for the last day and missing the college's cutoff time
  • Paying wrong fee amount (especially fee-waiver candidates)
  • Leaving originals with anyone except authorised staff
  • Not getting stamped acknowledgement of document submission
  • Forgetting to check hostel / bus form deadlines at same visit
Document checklist ยท Click to tick

Everything you need to upload and carry to the TFC.

Click any card to mark it ready. Mandatory documents apply to every candidate; conditional documents apply only if the tag matches your situation. Keep originals and two sets of photocopies.

Checklist progress 0 / 15 ready
College categories ยท Know the landscape

Four types of colleges, four very different experiences.

Over 519 engineering colleges participate in TNEA, but they fall into four distinct categories โ€” each with its own fee structure, placement story, and admission cutoffs. Understanding the difference is the first step in a smart choice list.

01

University Departments & Constituent Colleges

Run directly by Anna University โ€” including CEG Guindy, MIT Chromepet, ACT, SAP, and regional campuses at Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirunelveli, and Tiruchirappalli. The highest-cutoff tier; these are the seats top-rankers target.

How to read this table: NIRF rank reflects 2025 standings (released August 2025). NAAC grades are most-recent published cycles. CSE OC cutoff is the closing mark for general-category Computer Science Engineering in TNEA 2025 round 1 (or institutional last-round figure where TNEA does not apply). Highest package and median package come from each college's 2024 NIRF placement disclosure. IIT Madras admits via JEE Advanced; NIT Trichy via JEE Main; SSN, VIT, SRM, SASTRA, Amrita have institutional entrance exams โ€” these show in the table for benchmarking but are not TNEA seats.
Awareness ยท Avoid the most expensive mistake

Always use the college code, never the name.

Tamil Nadu has 423 engineering colleges. Several share nearly identical names and students lose admission every year by listing the wrong code in their TNEA choice form. Once submitted and allotted, the seat is locked. Below are the most-confused name groups from the official 2025 dataset โ€” verified against tneaonline.org. Always cross-check the 4-digit code before locking your choice list.

This is an AI-generated guidance tool. Cutoffs, college lists, and predictor results are computed from the official 2025 TNEA portal data, but the recommendations themselves are produced algorithmically. Always validate your final choice list against tneaonline.org and consult a qualified counsellor before filling. EduAakashaa accepts no liability for decisions taken on AI output alone.

Choice-filling rule book ยท 8 rules

How to actually fill your TNEA choices without losing a seat

01

Always type the 4-digit code first, then verify the name

The portal autofills the college name once you enter the code. If the autofilled name doesn't exactly match what you intended โ€” stop and re-check.

02

Sort your choices in true preference order

The system auto-allocates the highest available choice. Choice #5 only matters if choices #1โ€“4 are out of reach. Don't list a "safe" college as #1 thinking you'll get bumped up later โ€” you won't.

03

List 30โ€“50 choices, not 10

Round-1 closing cutoffs can be 1โ€“2 marks higher than expected. A short list increases your chance of zero allotment. List ambitious + realistic + safe in 1:2:2 ratio.

04

Double-check the branch code

"CS" (Computer Science Engg) and "AM" (CSE โ€” AI & ML) are different programmes with different cutoffs. So are "AD" (AI & Data Sci) and "AI". One letter changes everything.

05

Verify NAAC and NBA accreditation per branch

A college with overall NAAC A++ may have specific branches that aren't NBA accredited. NBA accreditation matters more for placement than the overall NAAC grade.

06

Cross-check the location, not just the name

"Government College of Engineering" appears 9 times. "St. Joseph's" appears 4 times. Match the district AND street address shown on tneaonline.org against your intent.

07

Save and review before final submission

The portal lets you save and reopen. Print the saved list, sit with a parent or counsellor, walk through every code once before pressing final-submit. Mistakes after submission cannot be undone.

08

Don't blindly trust this AI tool

Why the zone matters more than you think

Your zone shapes hostel costs, internship access, alumni network density, and sometimes even placement company preference. A college in a less-travelled district can often deliver a better fit and seat than a crowded reach in Chennai. When building your choice list, treat zone as a filter โ€” not an afterthought.

Reservation framework

Tamil Nadu's 69% reservation, explained.

TN's reservation structure is among the most generous in India. Seven community-based categories sit vertically; a 7.5% horizontal quota for government school students cuts across all of them. Understanding your category correctly is how you unlock the full cutoff advantage.

BCM

MBC&DNC

SC

SCA
3%
ST

Govt School
7.5%
The 7.5% government school reservation runs horizontally โ€” it applies within each category above, not on top of it. Only Tamil Nadu natives qualify for community-based reservations; other-state candidates are treated under Open Competition.

How reservation translates to cutoffs

In practice, reserved categories see a 5โ€“15 mark relaxation versus OC for the same branch and college. A BC student with 190 often reaches branches that would demand 195+ for OC. This difference matters most at the top โ€” premier colleges where every half-mark moves the rank.

  • Community certificate must be permanent card or digitally signed e-certificate โ€” provisional won't work
  • Fee waivers under the 7.5% scheme cover tuition, hostel, and development fees per G.O. 221
  • Special reservations exist for Differently Abled, Ex-Servicemen's children, and Eminent Sportspersons
  • Other-state candidates: Anna University offers around 50 reserved seats via a non-TNEA process
  • First Graduate candidates receive a separate tuition fee waiver on submission of the joint declaration
Allotment response ยท The 4 options

After seat allotment, you have two days to respond.

This is where students lose seats by misunderstanding a button. Each option carries different consequences for the next round. Read carefully before you click.

Accept ยท Stay

Accept & Join

Take the allotted seat. Exit counselling. Report to the college and pay fees. Safe if this is your target or your best likely option.

Accept ยท Continue

Accept & Upward

Hold the current seat as a safety net, but remain in the queue for higher-preference options in the next round. You keep this seat if nothing better comes through.

Reject ยท Continue

Reject & Upward

Let go of the current seat, stay in the queue for higher choices. Risky if later rounds don't allot anything better โ€” you walk away with nothing.

Reject ยท Exit

Reject & Quit

Exit TNEA entirely. Typically used by students joining outside TN, pursuing JEE/BITS routes, or JoSAA. Cannot re-enter once selected.

General tips ยท From our counsellors

Nine lessons from past years of TNEA counselling.

These aren't hype. They're the patterns we see repeat with every batch that walks into EduAakashaa โ€” from Coimbatore and Chennai families alike.

TIP ยท 01

Apply on day one

Registration fills servers and slows things down. Early applications get better TFC slots, better verification dates, and fewer portal errors.

TIP ยท 02

Match your name everywhere

If your Class 10 says "Aarav S" and Class 12 says "Aarav Sundaram", get an affidavit ready. TFC officials won't accept name mismatches.

TIP ยท 03

Balance your choice list

Aim for three tiers: reach (5% above your predicted cutoff), target (at your cutoff), and safety (5โ€“10 below). Safety fills first, protects everything.

TIP ยท 04

Don't fix on one branch

CSE at tier-1 might be out of reach, but CSE + ECE + IT across tier-2 / 3 can rescue a good outcome. Branch rigidity shrinks your list.

TIP ยท 05

Talk to current students

Before you fill a college, find one second or third-year student from it. Ask about placements, workload, hostel, faculty โ€” not brochures.

TIP ยท 06

Understand the four options

Re-read the Accept & Upward vs Reject & Upward difference three times before clicking. Most seat-loss horror stories start here.

TIP ยท 07

Keep a parent in the loop

Two-day windows fly by. Share your portal login with one parent; let them be the second pair of eyes on deadlines and OTPs.

TIP ยท 08

Save everything as PDF

Every screen, every allotment order, every fee receipt โ€” PDF and email yourself. If the portal glitches on day one of college, you have proof.

TIP ยท 09

Plan the supplementary round

Even if you skip the general counselling or miss an allotment, the supplementary round opens real options. It's not a consolation โ€” it's a second chance.

FAQ ยท Real questions we get asked

Questions from parents and students, answered plainly.

The same doubts repeat every year. We've collected the most common ones below. If you don't find yours, the contact form at the bottom reaches us directly.

Qยท01 ยท Basics

Is there a written entrance exam for TNEA 2026?

No. Admission is based purely on Class 12 PCM marks, normalised to a cutoff out of 200 (Maths 100, Physics 50, Chemistry 50). There is no JEE-style written test. Your board results are your entrance exam.
Qยท02 ยท Eligibility

I studied in CBSE outside Tamil Nadu. Can I still apply?

You can apply under the Open Competition (OC) category โ€” but you will not qualify for community-based reservation, which is reserved for Tamil Nadu natives who have studied Class 8โ€“12 within the state. If you're a TN native who studied outside, a digitally signed nativity certificate becomes mandatory.
Qยท03 ยท Documents

What if my community certificate is not yet ready?

Apply for the permanent community certificate (from the Revenue Department / Taluk office) before the application deadline. Provisional or acknowledgement slips are not accepted at the TFC. Certificates obtained after the application deadline will not be considered for reservation benefit.
Qยท04 ยท Process mistakes

I made a typo in my application. Can I fix it?

There is no dedicated correction window after final submission. Use the preview screen before submit โ€” carefully. Post-submission, your only remedy is the grievance redressal window, usually in late June. You'll need to visit the DoTE office in Chennai with supporting documents. Corrections are considered case-by-case and not guaranteed.
Qยท05 ยท Cutoffs

What cutoff do I need for CSE at a top college?

For OC candidates, top CSE branches (CEG, MIT, PSG, TCE) typically demand 195โ€“200 out of 200. BC/MBC candidates see a 5โ€“10 mark relaxation. Ranks below the top 500 practically guarantee premier CSE/IT. Beyond 10,000, expect tier-2 colleges. These are patterns, not promises โ€” cutoffs shift each year based on applicants and seats.
Qยท06 ยท Choice filling

How many choices should I fill?

Fill as many as you reasonably would accept if allotted โ€” don't artificially cap your list at 20 or 30. A healthy list usually has 40โ€“80 entries, covering reach, target, and safety tiers. The system allots the first achievable choice in your order; filling more never hurts, but filling options you wouldn't actually attend is how people end up stuck in a bad seat.
Qยท07 ยท After allotment

What does "Accept & Upward" actually mean?

You take the current seat (pay fees, complete reporting at TFC), but stay in the queue for a higher-preference allotment in the next round. If nothing better comes through, you keep this seat. If a better choice is allotted, it replaces the current one automatically. It's the lowest-risk way to stay in the game.
Qยท08 ยท Fees

How much are college fees once I'm admitted?

It varies dramatically. Government college tuition can be as low as โ‚น7,000โ€“โ‚น15,000 per year. Government-aided colleges sit around โ‚น30,000โ€“โ‚น50,000. Self-financing colleges range from โ‚น50,000 to well over โ‚น2 lakh a year. Students admitted under the 7.5% government school scheme receive a full tuition, hostel, and development fee waiver.
Qยท09 ยท Missed rounds

I missed an allotment round. Is it over?

Not necessarily. The supplementary counselling round opens for candidates who did not secure a seat in the main rounds, plus those who failed Class 12 and later cleared in supplementary. If you missed because of a document issue, get it fixed and watch the DoTE portal for re-registration notices.
Qยท10 ยท TFC visit

Can my parent attend the TFC verification instead of me?

The candidate must be present. Parents are strongly encouraged to accompany, but originals must be handed over by the applicant. Bring one parent with a Government ID โ€” useful if queries about nativity or community come up. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your assigned slot.
