DoTE has confirmed that TNEA 2026 online registration will commence in the second week of May 2026, immediately following the Tamil Nadu HSC results announced on May 8, 2026. The full counselling schedule will be published on tneaonline.org once registration opens.

According to DoTE-sourced reports, fifteen Tamil Nadu engineering colleges recorded zero student intake in the 2025 TNEA cycle. Anna University was asked to share deficiencies. This is a strong signal — verify any unfamiliar college's NAAC, NBA accreditation and live operating status before listing it as a choice.
In the 2025 cycle, around 2,39,299 candidates were ranked based on normalised Class 12 scores. 141 students secured ranks 1–141 by scoring a perfect 200/200. Round 2 allotment closed on August 4, 2025; supplementary deadline was extended to August 14, 2025 by the Higher Education Minister.
There is no written entrance test. Admission to government, government-aided, Anna University constituent, and surrendered self-financing seats is decided by your normalised Class 12 marks in PCM — reduced to 200.
Maths scaled to 100, Physics scaled to 50, Chemistry scaled to 50. Total out of 200 becomes your cutoff mark for ranking.
Same cutoff? Ties are broken in this order: Maths marks → Physics marks → Chemistry marks → date of birth (older first) → random number.
General counselling for the main rank list, Supplementary counselling for remaining seats, and a separate SCA-to-SC conversion round.
General category needs ≥45% in PCM; reserved categories need ≥40%. Passed 10+2 with PCM compulsory from a recognised board.

Unlike some national exams, TNEA has no maximum age limit. Candidates of any age who meet academic and nativity criteria can apply.
Your Class 12 Maths mark is halved to fit 100; Physics and Chemistry are halved to fit 50 each. The sum becomes your TNEA cutoff — the number all colleges publish in their cutoff tables.

Visit the official TNEA portal and click "New Registration". Enter name, date of birth, email, and mobile number. An OTP confirms the mobile, and a unique Application ID and password are generated. Keep a written copy of both.
Enter Class 10, 11 (for TN board), and 12 marks exactly as they appear on the marksheet. Select your community, nativity, special category (if any), schooling history from 6th to 12th, and preferred TFC for document verification.
The application fee is ₹500 for OC, BC, BCM, MBC & DNC candidates, and ₹250 for SC, SCA, and ST candidates. Pay online via debit/credit card, net banking, or UPI. Demand Draft (DD) payment is accepted only at the TFC in favour of "The Secretary, TNEA", payable at Chennai.
Scan every required document clearly — Class 10 and 12 marksheets, TC, community and nativity certificates (if applicable), photo, signature. Upload on the portal, preview each file, tick the declaration, and click "Freeze Upload". Freezing is irreversible.
DoTE assigns every registered candidate a unique 10-digit random number, used for tie-breaking and verification scheduling. The number appears in your portal login and is sent via SMS. This determines your TFC verification slot.
Report to your chosen TFC (around 110 TFCs across the state) with every original certificate. Officials match the uploaded scans against originals. Any mismatch can delay or reject your application. Only verified candidates enter the rank list.
After verification, DoTE publishes the TNEA rank list. Check yours, verify that category, 7.5% eligibility, and special reservations are correctly reflected. If something is wrong, the grievance redressal window is your only chance to flag it.
The single most important step. You can list many college-branch combinations in order of preference. The system tries to allot your highest-ranked available choice. Research cutoffs, placement, location, and fees before locking. Add realistic safety options at the bottom.
After allotment is released, you get two days to respond: Accept & Join, Accept & Upward, Reject & Upward, or Reject & Quit. The choice you pick controls whether you remain in the counselling pipeline. Download the provisional allotment order.
Carry the allotment order and all originals to the allotted college (or nearest TFC, depending on the round). Pay the tuition fees within the deadline. Failure to report on time cancels the seat and ejects you from further rounds.

Fully funded by the Tamil Nadu government. Includes Government College of Technology Coimbatore, Thanthai Periyar GIT Vellore, and others across Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Theni, Tiruchendur. Low fees, solid infrastructure, strong alumni.
Private institutions receiving partial government funding — the classic "value for money" picks. PSG College of Technology, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Coimbatore Institute of Technology sit here. Moderate fees, excellent legacy placements.
Privately managed, AICTE-approved, affiliated to Anna University. The largest category by count — 400+ institutions. Quality varies widely: from Kumaraguru, Kongu, Velammal, St. Joseph's (excellent) down to small lesser-known colleges. Only the surrendered seats in this category come through TNEA.

Tamil Nadu has 423 engineering colleges. Several share nearly identical names and students lose admission every year by listing the wrong code in their TNEA choice form. Once submitted and allotted, the seat is locked. Below are the most-confused name groups from the official 2025 dataset — verified against tneaonline.org. Always cross-check the 4-digit code before locking your choice list.
9 different government colleges in TN are literally named the same. Only the location and 4-digit code distinguish them. The placement difference between them is enormous.
The Sri Krishna College of Engineering & Technology in Coimbatore (a strong NIRF Top 100 institution) is regularly confused with at least 6 similarly-named colleges of vastly different quality.
5 colleges in TN start with "St. Joseph". The Chengalpet flagship is autonomous and well-placed; others are smaller affiliated institutions. Only the code tells you which is which.
Three completely different management groups, similar-sounding names, and at least 6 colleges sharing variants. Verify the trustee group AND the campus location before listing.
Both are autonomous, both are run by the same trust, both sit in Kancheepuram — but they are distinct campuses with different cutoffs and different branches.
Both are run by the PSG & Sons trust in Coimbatore but they are distinct institutions with different fee tiers, branches, and cutoffs. PSG Tech is the heritage govt-aided campus; PSG iTech is the newer self-financing arm.
The portal autofills the college name once you enter the code. If the autofilled name doesn't exactly match what you intended — stop and re-check.
The system auto-allocates the highest available choice. Choice #5 only matters if choices #1–4 are out of reach. Don't list a "safe" college as #1 thinking you'll get bumped up later — you won't.
Round-1 closing cutoffs can be 1–2 marks higher than expected. A short list increases your chance of zero allotment. List ambitious + realistic + safe in 1:2:2 ratio.
"CS" (Computer Science Engg) and "AM" (CSE — AI & ML) are different programmes with different cutoffs. So are "AD" (AI & Data Sci) and "AI". One letter changes everything.
A college with overall NAAC A++ may have specific branches that aren't NBA accredited. NBA accreditation matters more for placement than the overall NAAC grade.
"Government College of Engineering" appears 9 times. "St. Joseph's" appears 4 times. Match the district AND street address shown on tneaonline.org against your intent.
The portal lets you save and reopen. Print the saved list, sit with a parent or counsellor, walk through every code once before pressing final-submit. Mistakes after submission cannot be undone.

TN's reservation structure is among the most generous in India. Seven community-based categories sit vertically; a 7.5% horizontal quota for government school students cuts across all of them. Understanding your category correctly is how you unlock the full cutoff advantage.
In practice, reserved categories see a 5–15 mark relaxation versus OC for the same branch and college. A BC student with 190 often reaches branches that would demand 195+ for OC. This difference matters most at the top — premier colleges where every half-mark moves the rank.
This is where students lose seats by misunderstanding a button. Each option carries different consequences for the next round. Read carefully before you click.
Take the allotted seat. Exit counselling. Report to the college and pay fees. Safe if this is your target or your best likely option.
Hold the current seat as a safety net, but remain in the queue for higher-preference options in the next round. You keep this seat if nothing better comes through.
Let go of the current seat, stay in the queue for higher choices. Risky if later rounds don't allot anything better — you walk away with nothing.
Exit TNEA entirely. Typically used by students joining outside TN, pursuing JEE/BITS routes, or JoSAA. Cannot re-enter once selected.

If your Class 10 says "Aarav S" and Class 12 says "Aarav Sundaram", get an affidavit ready. TFC officials won't accept name mismatches.
Aim for three tiers: reach (5% above your predicted cutoff), target (at your cutoff), and safety (5–10 below). Safety fills first, protects everything.
CSE at tier-1 might be out of reach, but CSE + ECE + IT across tier-2 / 3 can rescue a good outcome. Branch rigidity shrinks your list.
Before you fill a college, find one second or third-year student from it. Ask about placements, workload, hostel, faculty — not brochures.
