State and college counselling
Outside JoSAA, each state runs its own counselling or leaves admission to the college. The Council of Architecture does not admit students: it sets the minimum standards and the NATA test. State by state, the rules are in the notes inside each state heading in the list below.

This list has 73 of the roughly 369 Council-approved institutions: all 40 NIRF-ranked ones, the JoSAA institutes and a selection of state and private colleges. It is not the full Council list; check coa.gov.in for every approved college. Intake, students, placement and the other NIRF factors are shown for the 40 ranked institutions, read from the data they submitted to NIRF. A fee or quota appears only where the institution or a government notice states it.
Fees at a glance
These figures come from each college’s own pages or notices, for the year noted in its card. A fee is a tuition fee unless the card says otherwise: hostel, mess, studio materials and exam fees are extra.

Everything below is read from the data each institution submitted to NIRF for the 2025 Architecture and Planning ranking. The institution, not NIRF, is the author of these numbers. Placement is for the 5-year B.Arch programme unless a row says B.Planning; "placed" counts students placed through the institute, and many graduates go on to higher studies or practice instead. Median salary is the figure the institution reported for placed graduates, in rupees a year, and is shown only when at least one student was placed. Batch sizes are small, so one year can swing a percentage a lot: read the three-year average beside it. Compare institutes side by side.
NRI quota
NRI, PIO, OCI and foreign-national students reach architecture seats by two doors: the government door (DASA) and the college door (an NRI or management quota that a private college or state sets for itself).
The government door: DASA 2026
| Seats | Supernumerary, up to 15 percent of the programme’s seats at each participating institute. One third of DASA seats (5 percent) are kept for Children of Indian Workers in the Gulf (CIWG). |
| Qualifying exam | JEE Main 2026 Paper 2A for B.Arch and Paper 2B for B.Planning. |
| Institutes with architecture or planning in DASA 2025 and 2026 | NIT Calicut, NIT Tiruchirappalli, VNIT Nagpur, MANIT Bhopal, SPA New Delhi, SPA Bhopal and SPA Vijayawada. NIT Hamirpur, NIT Raipur and MNIT Jaipur appear in 2025 only (DASA 2025 and 2026 report). |
| Residence rule | Two years of study abroad (Classes 11 and 12) in the last eight years for Indian nationals, with the qualifying exam passed from abroad. All foreign nationals are eligible. |
| Enrolment fee | US$ 300 non-refundable registration plus first-semester tuition: ₹62,500 for CIWG, US$ 4,000 for Non-SAARC (total US$ 4,300), US$ 2,000 for SAARC nationals (total US$ 2,300). Parents in India may pay in INR. Balance tuition and hostel fees are set by each institute. |
| Candidates who also took JoSAA | Allowed, as long as the candidate keeps within DASA’s rule on retained seats (see the DASA 2026 brochure). |
The college door
- Private and deemed universities usually advertise an NRI or management quota. The size of the quota, the fee (often in US dollars) and whether NATA or a test is required are the college’s own decisions. A letter or prospectus line from the college is the only proof.
- State government colleges follow the state’s rules. Many states reserve a small number of NRI seats in state colleges, others do not. Ask the state counselling authority for the current notice.
- The Council of Architecture sets the minimum academic standards and the aptitude test. It does not set fee or quota rules, so a quota offered by a college is not a recognition issue, but the college must be CoA-approved for your degree to count.
- Never pay a quota fee to an agent. Pay only into the college’s own account against a receipt, and check approval on coa.gov.in first.
Colleges that state an NRI quota (from their own pages)
| College | What they say |
|---|---|
| School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh | SPAV admission page lists DASA 2026 as an admission route and supernumerary seats for Kashmiri migrants and wards of defence personnel; no USD fee read. |
| Institute of Architecture and Planning, Nirma University Ahmedabad, Gujarat | 15% NRI / NRI-sponsored seats (18 of 120); tuition USD 3,250 per semester plus Rs 14,700 other fees and deposit (2026-27) |
| Uka Tarsadia University (B.Arch programme) Bardoli, Gujarat | 25% Management/NRI quota filled on merit under COA and Gujarat Govt criteria via ACPC procedure |
| School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) Bhopal Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh | UG admission form references JoSAA, CSAB and DASA (2023); PG notice states NRI/PIO/OCI apply via DASA. UG 2026-27 supernumerary seats described only for Kashmiri Migrants and Defence Personnel. |
| MKSSS Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Architecture for Women (BNCA) Pune, Maharashtra | NRI seat fee listed as NA on fee page |
| National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (Department of Architecture) Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu | DASA/SII category pays tuition in USD: USD 2,000 per semester (SAARC) and USD 4,000 per semester (non-SAARC) plus the same annual and one-time fees (INR) as other categories, per the 2025 batch fee sheet. |
Architecture and Planning ranking
What is NIRF, and why does it matter?
NIRF, the National Institutional Ranking Framework, is the Ministry of Education’s yearly ranking of Indian institutions. Each institution that takes part submits its own data in one fixed format. NIRF scores it on five parameters and publishes a ranked list for each category. Architecture and Planning is one category: 40 institutions were ranked in 2025.
- A common yardstick. A central institute and a private university are measured on the same factors, so you compare like with like.
- Mostly measured data. About 90 percent of the score comes from measured data. Perception, a survey of employers and academics, is only 10 percent.
- It shows trade-offs. A college can be strong on placement and weak on research, or the reverse. The five scores and 15 sub-scores show where.
- Claims you can check. Placement, intake and student numbers on these pages are what each institution told NIRF. Hold them against a brochure.
- The data is reported by the institutions themselves.
- Only 40 institutions were ranked, out of about 369 recognised by the Council of Architecture. An unranked college can still be a good one.
- It does not measure studio teaching, design culture, internships or the city you will live in.
- Research and spending marks favour larger, older institutions, and placement batches are small, so a year can swing a lot.
- A rank is no substitute for Council of Architecture approval. Check that first.

Ranks and the five scores are copied from the NIRF 2025 Architecture and Planning list. For this list the weights are 0.40, 0.20, 0.20, 0.10 and 0.10: we worked them out from the published scores, which they reproduce to two decimals. The NIRF engineering paper uses different weights (0.30, 0.30, 0.20, 0.10, 0.10), so do not read this list with those. Placement, median salary and intake come from the data sheet each institution submitted to NIRF. 40 institutions were ranked in 2025.
How the NIRF score is built
| Score | Weight | Made up of (marks on the Architecture chart) |
|---|---|---|
| TLR: Teaching, learning and resources | 0.40 | Student strength (20), faculty-student ratio (30), faculty qualification and experience (20), financial resources and their use (30) |
| RPC: Research and professional practice | 0.20 | Publications (60), quality of publications (20), projects and professional practice (20) |
| GO: Graduation outcomes | 0.20 | Placement and higher studies (40), university examinations (30), median salary (30) |
| OI: Outreach and inclusivity | 0.10 | Students from other states and countries (30), women (30), economically and socially challenged students (20), facilities for physically challenged students (20) |
| PR: Perception | 0.10 | A survey of employers and academic peers (100) |
Reading the 39 rating charts we hold (of 40): almost every institution earns full or near-full marks for accessibility, women, examinations and faculty-student ratio, and loses most marks on research income, publications, support for economically challenged students and perception. The scores that separate institutions most are financial resources, publications and perception. See each institute’s chart, a heat map of all sub-scores and the details in the rating-chart analysis.

Common questions
Q01Do I need NATA if I write JEE Main Paper 2?
For JoSAA seats (SPAs, NITs, IIEST) the Paper 2A rank is enough. For most state and private colleges, NATA is the accepted test. Many students write both, because the two cover different sets of colleges.
Q02Is a B.Arch degree from any college valid?
Only if the college is approved by the Council of Architecture for that session. Check coa.gov.in before paying any fee.
Q03How many attempts does NATA give?
For 2026: up to two in Phase 1 or one in Phase 2, not both. Confirm the 2027 rule in the new brochure.
Q04Can I get B.Planning without B.Arch?
Yes. B.Planning is a four-year degree in its own right and uses Paper 2B. The SPAs and MANIT Bhopal offered it through JoSAA in 2026.
Q05What if my college does not publish fees or placements?
Take the NIRF data sheet if it has one, then ask the admissions office to put the fee head by head and last year’s placement count in writing. This page leaves a field blank when we could not find a source.
Q06Does a higher NIRF rank mean a better studio experience?
It means better scores on the NIRF parameters (teaching resources, research, graduate outcomes, outreach, perception). Visit, speak to students and look at student work.
